In 1995 as a tribute to the world AIDS pandemic, a painting by Colum titled "Soaring" was the illustrative theme for the AIDS Walk, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. This was the first "original" artwork to be used for the commemorative T-Shirt for the Cleveland AIDS Walk. Thereafter, the organizers sought submissions from other artists to submit original illustrations for the annual memorabilia. Excerpt from a letter by the artist to his sister, on the creation of "Soaring" "...The scene I have painted is on The Burren*, County Clare. The reason I chose this area is the next country from here due west is America. I associate this area with flying kites with my friend Adrian (big kids!), a sense of freedom, heaven (for the want of a better word), space, clean air, all of those feelings associated with getting away from the pressures of everyday living ...happiness, contentment, I suppose a sense of hope... The kite is anchored to a stone, ...a sense of security, reaching out. There are seven stones for the seven members of my family; possibly the big one is our dad! ... And, it’s a beautiful day, there is hope, there is goodness and good things in life, but its a big ocean to cross..." -Colum McEvoy * "The Burren", an area in County Clare, Ireland is famous for its limestone fields and rare flora.
